Writing is a lot more than research papers and essays. Writing can be anything; even the grocery lists you make are a form of writing. Writing can also be digital, which most students will enjoy. This doesn't mean typing those research papers and essays in a word document either. There are many digital tools out there with which students can express creativity. In ECI 546, New Literacies and Media, students learned to use Flipgrid. Flipgrid is great for writing as it allows students to express themselves digitally, which is a nice change from the traditional pencil and paper. Instead of a quick write or journal, get students' ideas flowing with this helpful tool! Students briefly film their answers to questions; it's quick, easy, and effective for both students and teachers.

Dr. Hervey also challenged our cohort to explore new technology through our "Cool Tools" assignment. Chao and I worked together to learn how we could use the tool Storybird. You can check our Piktochart link of how to use Storybird in the classroom. (How to use Storybird)
You can also go through video to see how to teach writing using Storybird. |
For our final paper in ECI 546, we were asked to reflect and synthesize what we learned this semester with regard to teaching through technology and to project our continuing goals for technology integration. My biggest takeaway was the importance of maintaining a technological pedagogical content knowledge (TPACK) framework in order to truly prepare my students to be successful 21st century citizens. On the right, you can see the PBI paper about implementing game-based learning in teaching writing. You can also see our group's video to know more about games in learning.
